Public trust is different to each citizen. Those who have not received late or inaccurate tax bills may have more trust in the Tax Office than those who have. Likewise, those who have deficient roof truss connections may have less trust in the Office of Building Code Enforcement than those who haven’t. In 2007 more than 2,700 houses built at SCHH between 2004 and 2007 were re-inspected; repairs were made to 668 of them. Also in 2007, it was reported that Building Code Enforcement issued occupancy certificates for SCHH houses with known, but uncorrected, deficiencies. Months later Beaufort County announced that Building Code Enforcement would become certified; the process took about a year. Afterwards, private home inspectors found roof truss connection problems at new SCHH homes that were built well after 2007. I suspect that the owners of these SCHH homes don’t have any higher trust in Building Code Enforcement than those who repeatedly receive late and/or inaccurate tax bills have in the Tax Office. Who can blame them?
